The Unexpected History
Behind Aviation’s Most Trusted Sickness Bag
Who would guess that the small Sic-Sac®—tucked neatly into seat pockets—has a fascinating tale all its own?
Originally designed in the 1930s, when flying was still considered a novelty, the Sic-Sac® was designed by an entrepreneurial family in Oklahoma. As air travel expanded, so did demand for this small but essential comfort item, until it became a staple on every flight. In 1947, the design was passed down the family and trademarked by R. Dardis Higbie and his wife Betty. They formed the foundation of Allied Aviation, Inc. A company that would quietly accompany countless journeys for decades.
When Dardis passed, Betty Higbie took the reins, resolute in her mission to preserve the family legacy. The meticulous, multi-step process of folding each bag, applying nomenclature, and inserting them into discreet envelopes proved too arduous for one person alone—especially as Betty herself aged. Undeterred, she already had a relationship with a nearby assisted living center and invited elderly residents to contribute, offering them both purpose and a dignified place within the American workforce.
By the time Betty reached 88, she stood at a pivotal crossroads. She yearned for rest and well-earned retirement, yet no one in her family wished to inherit the multi-generational business. Then, as if by providence, a single phone call altered the course of the story. She connected with Annie Balshi, President and CEO of B.E. Princess, the nation’s #1 cabin supplier. Moved by Betty’s devotion and the enduring charm of the brand, Annie stepped in—ensuring the Sic-Sac® would continue for generations to come.

Upholding a legacy, today
Today, the Sic-Sac® rests securely in the care of B.E. Princess, poised for seamless delivery without so much as a hint of turbulence. Yet the intricate process of producing the Sic-Sac® remains an enduring labor of love—one that requires focused dedication not easily integrated into the operations of a modern aviation supplier.
Annie Balshi, whose career has been rooted in purpose and compassion, discovered the most poignant continuation of the Sic-Sac® legacy. She partnered with a charitable organization in Florida, devoted to restoring opportunity to individuals experiencing difficulties after life-altering hardships. Now, under pristine, sanitized conditions and careful supervision, it is those working to get back on their feet who lovingly assemble every Sic-Sac®—proof that even the simplest items can carry stories of redemption, resilience, and hope.
