To our valued customers:
As most of you are well aware there have recently been some significant price
increases in the food industry. Virtually all food manufactures are being forced to raise prices. Some of our suppliers have raised prices multiple times over the past few months. These increases are unprecedented in our company’s history. Currently, many manufacturers are not permitting contracts due to the volatility in the commodities market. Other noteworthy factors contributing to the increased pricing include: the weak US Dollar, farmers changing crops to take advantage of the market, and the continued surge in oil prices. We wanted to take this opportunity to explain how these factors are impacting the products we sell.
First, the weakening US Dollar has had dramatic effects on both imports and exports. For products that are imported, such as cashews, our costs are much higher because our currency has declined in value. Our country is also experiencing an increase in the volume being exported because the weakened US Dollar has lowered the cost of US exports to the world market. Thus, domestically grown products have increased in value.
Another price influencing factor has been the transition many farmers have made to plant crops yielding the greatest return. Changes to crops have had a negative effect on the wheat, oat, peanut, and sunflower seed commodities. The wheat market has been hit the hardest. Prices have climbed from $3 a bushel to $11 a bushel. Wheat price increases have most notably affected the price of our sesame sticks, which in turn affects most of our trail mixes. Similarly, oat prices have impacted the pricing of our granolas. Chocolate and other sugar based items have increased tremendously in the past three weeks, raising candy to an all time high.
Finally, the soaring price of crude oil, and consequent transportation costs, is well documented.
We acknowledge the competitive nature of today’s marketplace and vow to continue to do all we can to work with you during these unsettled economic times. We truly value your business and loyalty to B.E. Princess. Please feel free to contact us if you should have any questions.
